Why Is My AC Not Cooling Properly?
Dirty Air Filters: Clogged filters restrict airflow, causing the evaporator coil to freeze and blocking cool air from circulating. Replace or wash your filters every 1 to 3 months.
Incorrect Thermostat Settings: Ensure your thermostat is set to “Cool” rather than “Fan” (which just blows uncooled air) and set to a temperature below the current room temperature.
Blocked or Dirty Condenser (Outdoor Unit): Leaves, dirt, and debris around the outdoor unit block heat transfer. Clear at least two feet of space around the unit and gently rinse the fins with a hose.
Refrigerant Leak: Low refrigerant levels mean the system cannot absorb heat effectively. If you notice a ice buildup on the copper pipes or hear a hiss, contact an HVAC professional to repair the leak and recharge the fluid.
Frozen Evaporator Coil: Poor airflow or low refrigerant causes the coils to freeze into a block of ice. Turn off the AC and run only the fan to let it melt before restarting.
Leaking Air Ducts: In central AC systems, tears or gaps in the ductwork allow cool air to escape into walls or the attic before reaching your rooms.
Undersized Unit: If the room size exceeds the British Thermal Units (BTU) capacity of your AC, it will run constantly without lowering the temperature adequately.
